Honorary President of the PSE Celebrates a Round Birthday
Siegfried Paufler turns 80

He has bred world famous straight Egyptian Arabians such as Imperial Madheen, Mesoudah-M, and Maydan-Madheen. Their names are inseperably linked to Professor Doctor Siegfried Paufler. The honorary president of the PSE celebrates his 80th birthday on 26 February 2008.

Together with his wife, Ruth, he breeds excellent straight Egyptian Arabians near the university town of Göttingen. The defining influence on his breeding programme, which serves to remind us that quality comes before quantity, was the bay mare Madinah (Ibn Galal x Mona II), bred by Dr. Hans-Jörg Tauschke. From their stable in a converted garage, Madinah’s straight Egyptian foals set out to conquer Europe. Her son Imperial Madheen (by Messaoud) was even exported to the USA, where he became a world famous and popular sire. His full sister, the Elite mare Mesoudah-M, stayed in Germany, as did their half brother, the premium stallion Madallan-Madheen (by Ansata El Salaam). Mesoudah-M lived up to her dam’s heritage, producing among others the multiple champion and sire of champions, Maydan-Madheen (by Maysoun).

A writer of articles which bespeak his passion for straight Egyptian Arabians with every word, an inspector for the VZAP, an ECAHO judge – Arabian horses have played a huge part in the life of Siegfried Paufler, who took his doctor’s degree in veterinary medicine in 1955. His particular interest in straight Egyptian bloodlines also contributed significantly to the revival of the Pyramid Society Europe in the 1990s. Until 2002, Siegfried Paufler was its chairman, today he is our greatly esteemed honorary president..

PSE Seminar
at Ponnath Arabian stud

In October 2006, the studfarm Ponnath Arabians in Kemnath (close to Bayreuth, Bavaria) was host to the Pyramid Society Europe seminar. More than 60 PSE members availed of the possibility to inform themselves about the subject of artificial insemination in the Arabian breeding and to see the new stallions at stud.
But in the beginning the information and later the enjoyment.

Artificial insemination is a very topical subject especially in the Arabian breed. Stallions from faraway continents are suddenly "available". Thanks to his many years of experience, Dr. med. vet. Rainer Heuschmann gave a lecture at the PSE seminar on the procedure of artificial insemination and answered with competence, difficult questions on change in sperm quality or the passing on of faults of the stallion, legal aspects and questions.

After the informative part, came the fun part. Mr. Michael Ponnath presented to the members amongst others, mares from the family of Moufisa Halima (Halim Al Kadir x Mofisa) who goes back to Moniet El Nefous and who plays an important role in his breeding programme as do the beautiful full sisters Moufisa Al Kidir and Bint Moufisa (Al Kidir x Moufisa Halima) and the mare Nasira Halima (Halim Al Kadir x Moufisa Al Kidir). Apart from these exquisite mares, there was also great interest in the newly imported stallions, the Imperial Imdal sons, PVA Karim and Sterling Vision. Where the in 1990 born PVA Karim through his dam BKA Rakiisah traces back four times to the mare Moniet El Nefous (Saklawi Gidran Ibn Sudan), the 12 year old Sterling Vision, is a son of Nagda (Nabiel x Bint Magidaa) and is linebred to the famous Obeyan mare Magidaa (Alaa El Din x Maysa). Truly two interesting stallions that are an enrichment for the European breed.

In the afternoon came the fun part. Michael Ponnath and his team presented to the PSE members and some guests mares and stallions of his breeding program. The first mares were imported in 2005. Among them the 21 year old Majidaa, by Shaikh Al Badi out of Magidaa (by Alaa El Din). This typey, strong and impressive Obeyan mare is a three-quarter sister to stallions like Alidaar or Ruminaja Ali respectively a half-sister to famous Bint Magidaa.
The Moufisa family plays the biggest part in the breeding program by now, represented by three daughters of Moufisa Halima (Halim Al Kadir x Mofisa), which traces back to Moniet El Nefous: Moufisa Al Kidir (1996), Bint Moufisa (1993) and Monisa Halima (2001) are all by Al Kidir, which is on lease in Kuwait. The next generation see their daughters Nasira Halima (Halim Al Kadir x Moufisa Al Kidir) or Malikah Halima (Maydan-Madheen x Bint Moufisa) as well as the feminine, elegant and refined Nashua Halima (Al Adeed Al Shaqab x Moufisa Al Kidir). The last one convinced Michael Ponnath to use Al Adeed on more mares of this family. Three mares are in foal to the World Champion Stallion for 2007.
Handicaped by hoove problems, PVA Kariim was only shown in halter. A refined stallion with a chiselled head, fine ears and well set neck, which also impressed people by his friendly expression. The fleabitten grey Sterling Vision convinced breeders not only by his type and body but also by his bold, upright movements. Two interesting stallions, that are truly an enrichment for Europe.

Al Lahab became Supreme Champion Stallion at the Egyptian Event, USA

Al Lahab (Laheeb x The Vision HG) stood two years at well-known Om El Arab International in sunny California. It was planed to enter the seven year old stallion at the Egyptian Event, Kentucky, before his return to Germany. The plan was crowned with success when Al Lahab was named Supreme Champion Stallion! His sire Laheeb received the title of Reserve Supreme Champion. Congratulations to Al Lahab proud owners, Hansjürgen and Inge Friedmann, Lunzenhof Stud, and Ariela Arabians, Israel, where Al Lahab and Laheeb were bred..

Egyptian Event Europe 2006

We are all indebted to the Metzlers, who organized this year’s Egyptian Event Europe with great personal dedication and a high financial risk. Since 1997, there has been an annual show for our straight Egyptian Arabians. The first shows were held in conjunction with C or B shows, most often at Kauber Platte, but since 2003 the show has had its own venue, beginning with the racetrack at Baden-Baden. The breeders Schwestermann, Preuss, and initially Friedmann, have taken the Egyptian Event Europe from strength to strength through three years.

With great energy, Diana and Markus Metzler have taken the initiative and, on 5 - 6 August 2006 held the Egyptian Event Europe at the historic Dillenburg state stud. The breeders of Egyptian Arabians followed the call with over 100 entries, and potent sponsors helped to lower the risk.

International competition was once more high, besides 38 German breeders, there were entries from Italy, Egypt, Belgium and even from Sharjah (United Arab Emirates). This illustrates once again the importance of the Egyptian Event Europe as a showcase for Egyptian breeding in Europe.

We are an international community of breeders; knowing foreign horses is equally as important as getting to know the people, the breeders; both must be nurtured, and contacts made at shows are just the right thing.

Our breeding goal is a highly refined purebred Arabian of straight Egyptian bloodlines, which is still in demand the world over. These noble animals can also be ridden, as is proved again and again at many performance shows. They are no useless ornaments, but horses found with hobby riders as well as in endurance competitions and Western riding. For these disciplines, they have to be specially trained and presented. While it would be possible to have such competitions parallel to the show, who would be willing to organize and finance this? It should certainly be a goal for the future to include ridden classes. It has already been done with endurance rides; perhaps there will be a continuation some time?

Junior Females
The show began with the yearling filly class, which was already of high quality. The winner was the bay Sharuby HP (Maydan-Mahdeen x Shahneekha), bred and owned by Horst Preuß, Germany. Her parentage needs no introduction, as it has already produced several world famous champion fillies. Following closely in second place was the MA Alishah daughter Rayyanah El Dahab out of Rasdani, from the Kullmann Stud, Germany. That was a good beginning! The stallion MA Alishah proved his quality as a sire several times at this show.

The winning two-year-old filly was the grey Grea Bint Bint Khattaara. She was awarded high notes for type, head and neck, and movements. Her sire Authentic Dahman, from the Kolster stud, is a son of Maysoun, her dam Grea Bint Khattaara is a daughter of the well-known Moroc. She is owned by AMT Visioni, Rogno in Italy. Almost equally high notes were awarded to DF Faaiqs Farida, owned by Francesco Tripodi, Italy. This filly was purchased from Susan Robertson in the USA and is by Faaiq el Madheen, who is linebred to the German export Imperial Madheen. Her dam Manintha Maymoon is a daughter of Orashan, from the Maiworm Stud in Germany. In this excellent class, the Rothenberg Stud’s Classic Shadwan daughter GR Nashidah was placed third, and the Al Lahab daughter Pyramid Lutfiyah, bred by the Wagner family, was fourth. All four fillies were very close in quality.

The three-year-old filly class was even better, with three top individuals in addition to the exceptional winner Mahala. Mahala (Al Lahab x Mahasin II by Al Kidir) is a filly that sets the standard, from her type through her body to her movements. She was bred in Germany by Susanne Reiter and is owned by Rabab Stud, Egypt. For type as well as for head and neck, she had four times the high score of 20. Very close behind her came True Baressa (out of True Nirwana) by the well-known US sire Imperial Baarez, who was Reserve Champion at the All Nations Cup. Two oustanding Al Lahab daughters followed with identical scores in third and fourth place. LV Salysha (out of Saira), bred and owned by Liesl Vetter, Germany, placed third because of her better movements, followed by Pyramid Lahara (out of Bint Kahila by Al Kidir), bred by Uwe-Jürgen Wagner, Germany, and owned by Bebo Stud, Egypt. Three Al Lahab daughters among the top four fillies, this surely speaks for this stallion’s qualities as a sire.

Mahala was named Junior Female Champion, with True Baressa as Reserve.

Junior Males
The yearling colt class was won by the grey Tammam Albadeia (Simeon Sharav x Tamima Albadeia), who was extremely typey. Bred by Dr. Nasr Marei, Egypt, he is a son of an Australian-bred sire, Simeon Sharav, who was Senior Reserve Champion at the EEE 2005 in Baden-Baden. Tammam is owned by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Saoud al Qasimi, Sharjah (UAE). There can hardly be a better example of the word-wide connections of Arabian breeding. With one point less, second place went to Bashir Al Gaug. This colt, who is also very typey, comes from the well-known Selva Stud in Italy. This farm has changed its programme to straight Egyptians several years ago and is now making its bid for the front places. The colt’s sire Mobarak Ikhnatoon was Champion at the Egyptian National Show at El Zahraa. His dam Bahrija Bint Bukra was bred by the Franke family in Germany and is a daughter of Mishaal HP, currently on lease to Texas, USA.

The top two-year-old colt was the Al Lahab son Pyramid Layyan, who got particularly high notes for type. His dam Bint Kahila is a daughter of Al Kidir, a strong sire of type. The owner and breeder is Uwe-Jürgen Wagner, Germany. Pyramid Layyan also won the „Most Classic Head“ class for males. The second placed Farid El Dahab is an MA Alishah son out of the well-known mare Remarqable KA, owned by the Kullmann family.

Of the three-year-old colts, the winner Ezz Ezzain deserves mention. This grey colt is of excellent type, which is not surprising, considering his bloodlines. He is sired by the Ansata Hejazi son Ansata Almurtajiz. His dam is Najeiah by Nahaman. He was bred Usamah al Kazemi, Kuwait, and is owned by Mohamed Omar, Egypt.

Ezz Ezzainwas named Junior Male Champion, the reserve title went to Bashir Al Gaug.

Foals
The filly foals were clearly superior, led by the pretty Authentic Nafisa, bred and owned by Rosemarie Kolster, Germany. She is by El Ahhim Shah (by Ansata Halim Shah) out of Authentic Nabeelah. A filly with great presence, who deservedly won the Foal Championship. Reserve Champion Foal and second in this class was the NK Hafid Jamil daughter Ra`Hidah from the stud of the Raes and Oben families, Belgium.

The colt foal class had only one entry: Mundher Al Rayyan (Ansata Hejazi x A Little Passion), owned by Christian Kesseböhmer, Germany.

Senior Females
Some excellent mares were forward in the senior classes as well, though one might have hoped for more entries. In the four- to six-year-old class, the exceptionally typey Authentic Diiyah was not to be beaten. Like the foal champion, Diiyah is a daughter of El Ahhim Shah. Her dam is the extremely typey mare Classic Dahra. Her breeder Rosemarie Kolster was on hand to accept the trophy. Second place went to Egyptian Pashina Ariella, Sylke Schumacher, Germany. By Abbas Pasha I out of Egyptian Asinah, a former winner at Kauber Platte and one of the few Sinan daughters in Germany, she has a great pedigree..

The class for seven- to ten-year-old mares was a joy to behold, here came the champions! The well-known F Samirah, a daughter of the Elite stallion Ali Valentino out of Sarameenah, bred and owned by the Friedmann family, Germany, not only had four 20s for type and head and neck, but the highest point score in the entire show. This mare is almost impossible to fault, from the head (winner of Most Classic Head) to the hooves.

Following close behind with four 20s was Grea Nazeera (by Moroc x AK Khattaara by Ibn Moniet El Nefous), bred by Tizzani and owned by Verolo of Filottrano, Italy. The interesting thing is that she is the dam of the winning two year old filly, both of the highest quality. Congratulations to the Italian breeders; we are happy that so many of them came with such good horses. The third placed mare was also from Italy, the liver chestnut Fay Zina T. She was bred in Germany by Peter Trost by his stallion Fay Sabun out of Zakeyat (by Gadallah). A mare with type and excellent movements. Fourth place went to Dahmraks Ahira Halima by El Thay Shah Manial. She hardly needs an introduction. At the EEE 2002 she had the highest point score of the show, at the EEE 2004 she was in the Top Five and at the Egyptian Classic Cup in June 2006 she was Best in Show. Bred by Sabine Hohenberger, Germany, she is now owned by Al Qusar Stud, Robert Schlereth, Germany.

F Samirah was named Champion Mare, and the Reserve Champion was Grea Nazeera.

The senior mare class was won by the typey and elegant Ansata Princessa (Prince Fa Moniet x Ansata Jahara by Ansata Halim Shah). A mare from Ansata Stud, USA, and owned by the Al Qusar Stud in Germany. Second place went to Nahma Bint Ibn Halim Shah by the exceptional sire El Thay Ibn Halim Shah. Her dam is Nadra by Madmaymour.

Senior Males
In the class for four- to six-year-old stallions, the MA Alishah son Yaout El Dahab stood at the top. This young stallion, who is out of a daughter of The Egyptian Prince, had an evenly high score for type and we are sure to see more of him in the future. Second place went to the El Moniet son Hattusha Moniet, shown by the Bahlmann family,Germany.

The seven- to ten-year-old class had superb entries. The three best stallions are well known from the shows and as breeding horses. First mention must go to multi-champion GR Amaretto. His sire Classic Shadwan (by Alidaar) is an exceptional sire. Through his dam Halim´s Asmara, he also carries the blood of Ansata Halim Shah. Second place, with only one point less, went to an entry from Sharjah, UAE. Gatsby CC (by Shahir by Salaa El Dine out of Miss Maggie Mae by The Minstril), imported from the USA, again embodies top bloodlines. This stallion, owned by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Saud Al Qasimi, showed plenty of type and excellent movements.

The third in the top group is also a prominent stallion. Hamra Aligance (Ali Valentino x Sombohlas Music), bred by the Weixelbaum family, Germany, and owned by G. Gubbioti, Italy, has already won at many international shows. Aligance was 1999 Junior Champion at Kaub and class winner at the All Nations Cup.

The other stallions, who all had high point scores, also deserve to be mentioned: Ibn El Nil RHM (Montasir x Nile Allure) owned by Khattab Stud,Egypt; Kamsin Rodan (Ansata Sinan x Khediva Rodaniyah) of Nebeltal Stud, Germany; Authentic Shamani (Maysoun x Saijda), Khattab and Tahany Studs, Egypt.

Naturally, Champion und Reserve came from this class. GR Amaretto was named Champion Stallion (a perfect „present“ for his owner Annette Escher, who had her birthday that day), with Gatsby CC as Reserve Champion.

Family groups
Family groups present a great challenge for breeders, but should be a part of any breed show. In the mare family class, there was unfortunately only one entry forward. Ansata Athena, owned by the Bindl family, Germany, was shown by her owners together with her daughter Aziza el Rih and granddaughter Amali el Rih. A very typey family, showing the genetic power of the Ansata bloodline.

The get of sire class happily had quite good competition. The winner was the group by El Ahhim Shah, which included two of the shows winners, followed by the group sired by MA Alishah, several of whose offspring had also left a good impression.

The group by Abbas Pasha I, which was placed third, was also very good.

The group by El Ahhim Shah was characterized by excellent type. It proved unbeatable, containing the class winner Authentic Diiyah, the Foal Champion Authentic Nafisa, the excellent Nadirah El Shah, and Camar Saviya. Congratulations to the Authentic Egyptian Arabians Stud, which documented what a treasure they have in their stables.

The stallion parade at the EEE has become tradition. Here too, thanks are due to the breeders who make the effort to take part. It was a pleasure to see and compare the stallions: Sahib by Salaa el Dine, Ibn Morafic II by Ibn Morafic, Pyramid Aalin by Ali Valentino, Masri el Salaam by Ansata el Salaam, Simeon Sharav by Asfour, and Alaa al Din by Salaa el Dine.

I would like to make one observation from a breeder’s point of view, which is that the most interesting sires of the event – based of their excellent offspring – were Al Lahab, Ali Valentino, Classic Shadwan, El Ahhim Shah, and MA Alishah, in no particular order.
